DATA SCIENCE

GROUP

What We Do

LEARN

DPU DS is a group for everyone, not just those with a computer science or mathematics background. We will teach you the rudiments of Data Science as we learn together. Talks will be given by students with particular interests or experience as well as professors and other professionals. Best of all, this is a collaborative environment. Have something you think is interesting? Present it to the group!

BUILD

We don't just sit and learn; we build. Aside from listening to speakers, we will develop algorithms, models and classifiers. The best way to grasp data science and machine learning is to get everyone interested and involved! Potential projects include: Random forest regression, NLP algorithms that recognize handwritten digits, Recommender systems that learn your preferences, and many more. Best of all, you get to decide what to make next, using any tools you want.

COMPETE

Yes, compete. For real money and real prizes. Many websites like Kaggle.com host competitions to build the best algorithm for a specific issue. In fact, you can win millions by building a versatile, effective model.

We also will host friendly competitions within the club. Using websites like Hackerrank and Project Euler, we will test your abilities to think analytically. Once we receive funding, the club will sponsor prizes for the highest performers.

We teach computers to learn.

We don't just program...

LEADERSHIP

President: Masayuki "Moon" Nagai
Moon is a junior majoring in Computer Science and Biochemistry. He is mainly interested in bioinformatics. In the summer of 2020, he worked on research to develop an AI player for a card game called Gin Rummy with Dr. Bogaerts and Dr. Byers. He also created a web application by using R for students who learn enzyme kinetics and Michaelis-Menten equation in the summer of 2019. He is in the ITAP and currently working with Dr. Gurnon and Dr. Byers on creation of a chemistry tool which provides a lead to researchers.
Alumnus: Juan Pablo Arenas Uribe
Juan Pablo was the former president who graduated in December 2020 with Computer Science major and Mathematics minor. He has worked on research involving Machine Learning and Graph Theory to develop an Artificial Intelligence for a specific card game. At DePauw, he is an Information Technology Associate and the president of the DePauw Robotics club. He spends his time working with both software and hardware projects involving different disciplines.

Alumnus: Shuto Araki
Shuto graduated from DePauw in May 2020 with Computer Science and Mathematics major. He works for Amazon AWS in Tokyo, Japan. In the summer of 2018, he did research in Artificial Intelligence with Zach and Juan Pablo. In this past summer, he worked on a research project in deep learning at Oak Ridge National Laboratory using the fastest supercomputer in the world, Summit. Outside of DPU DS, he is a Rector Scholar, Science Research Fellow, First-Year Resident Assistant, and the Analytics Editor at The DePauw.
Alumnus: Zach Wilkerson
Zach graduated from DePauw in May 2020 with Computer Science and Physics major.  In the past, he has done research with Dr. Howard Brooks in the Physics Department with atmospheric data collection and analysis using weather balloons, and he has also worked with Dr. Steven Bogaerts and Dr. Chad Byers to create novel solvability classifier algorithms for the card game Birds of a Feather.  In addition to his involvement with DPU DS, Zach is a Rector Scholar, Science Research Fellow, and Information Technology Associate.  He particularly enjoys software development, with emphasis on algorithm construction and optimization.
FACULTY ADVISOR: Dr. Steven Bogaerts
An associate professor of Computer Science, Steve holds a B.S. from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and an M.S. and Ph.D. from Indiana University. Before coming to DePauw, he held a position at Wittenberg University. Steve enjoys teaching a variety of courses, from introductory programming to senior projects. Research interests include artificial intelligence and parallelism, with special interest in research involving undergraduates.
EVENTS COORDINATOR: Sandy Smith
Manager of Programming and Outreach for the Management Fellows Program and McDermond Center for Management & Entrepreneurship, Sandy Smith serves as logistics and events coordinator for DPU DS. An employee of DePauw University for over 25 years in a variety of different roles, Sandy also serves as a point of contact between students and alumni.
